Revival in Borneo November 2009
The invitation to Borneo came from the Raja family who are part of Oasis Church in Beaumaris. Peterus Raja has 3 brothers all of whom are pastors in Sarawak, Borneo.
On my travels I discovered some wonderful information about the recent Christian history there. Missionaries had been going to Borneo from the early 1900’s and some of the indigenous tribes heard about the ‘new religion’ as they put it which had come to the Indonesian part of Borneo. They travelled across to meet these missionaries and then returned with a new found faith in Jesus. An Australian missionary by the name of Hudson Southwell went to Sarawak in the 1920’s and was able to teach the people more.
During the 1960’s a powerful revival broke out in Indonesia which affected Borneo. Hundreds of thousands of people who previously were communists, muslims or from the tribal animistic religions were saved. Dead people were raised to life, demons were cast out and many of the miracles recorded in the Bible were repeated such as water turning into wine when there wasn’t enough for a communion service. People who mocked at the preaching of the Gospel were sometimes struck dead and hundreds of evangelistic teams were formed. These teams went out without money to preach the Gospel to the unreached and experienced supernatural provision and saw great miracles as people turned to the Lord.
In the 1970’s a revival swept through Sarawak and I was privileged to meet a pastor who was in the beginnings of it. He was 16 at the time and was in a boarding school in Marudi, Sarawak. Opposite the school was a house which Hudson Southwell had built and 2 lady missionaries lived in it, one from Australia and the other from Scotland. They worked with the youth at the school and were sharing with them some of the things which the Lord was doing in the charismatic movement in the UK and the USA at the time including tapes of Kathryn Kuhlman and David Pawson and Dennis Bennetts book ‘9 o’clock in the morning’. The students said, why shouldn’t God do it here?’ The students started to pray in the school and prayed every night for 2 years. Whenever any one in the school was sick they were brought to the prayer group and were healed. When the time came for them to go back to their villages they took the revival fire with them.
Pastor Joseph Raja told me that he returned to his home and his father who was a pastor asked Joseph who was 16 at the time to close in prayer at one of the church services. He tried to but all he could do was weep and then the Holy Spirit fell on the congregation. People came to him for prayer and the sick were healed.
New churches were formed out of that move of God and I was blessed to be able to minister in 3 of them. The Lord gave me a message for them about preparing for a fresh move of God. There was a wonderful response from the people at all of the services. At one church out in a remote rural area hundreds of people came for a mid week evening service. Many gave their lives to Jesus whilst others received healing miracles and dedicated themselves afresh to the Lord for a new move of God??

The picture above is that of a woman testifying you healed eyesight and is now able to read things she couldn’t before prayer in the SIB church in Bintulu
God moves in Kenya
News from our latest trip February 2009,
Philip and Margaret Evans Pastors of Oasis Church, Beaumaris were invited by Bishop Lucas Afuwla (IGO member) and his wife Esther to come to Nairobi to open their new church building and hold seminars in the new church and also in churches under their care in the rural area of Kisumu – near the Ugandan border. The church members had worked hard to put the building together – using wood and corrugated iron. The floor was the ground covered with gravel.
Philip had the privilege of cutting the ribbon and declaring the church open, and a service of great joy and celebration and thanks was held in the new building which was packed out. Out of the hundreds of people present 15 responded to a salvation appeal and 4 of these had never attended the church before. Special cakes had been prepared by a local baker – one in the shape of the Bible and one in the shape of a church building.
We found the people very hungry for the teaching of the Word of God. Many testified how they had learned much and their lives had been transformed by what they had learned. The pastors told us how they intended to return to their churches and share the truths they had learned with their people. We also saw many miracle healings for which we praise the Lord. In Kisumu one lady testified that she had been really ill and in great pain in her bed at home when she heard that the Word of God was going to be preached in the church. She got up, came to church, encountered the power of God and was totally healed. There were also salvations and rededications of lives. We were invited to come back as soon as possible to teach the people again.
We taught the believers what is available to them in Christ and broke the poverty spirit that was over so many lives. They really received the message and described our ministry as teaching them how to fish so they can be fed for a lifetime as opposed to just giving them fish and feeding them once. They have material needs of all kinds of things including Bibles, Christian books, clothing etc. We had sent money previously for them to purchase Bibles for the people and they all were thanking us and showing us the Bibles they had received. The roads are in a terrible condition – full of potholes and the dust levels are indescribable. Bishop Lucas has to drive long distances to visit his churches in a Nissan Sunny car without air conditioning. This is not suitable for the conditions and also causes him to get extremely weary. We would love to be able to purchase for them a four wheel drive vehicle with air conditioning. Apparently it would be possible to get a good second hand one out there for about £3,000.
The new church is situated in a slum area and unemployment is very high. Bishop Lucas and Esther have plans to help the community with a feeding programme and also to teach the women to care for their children and also to teach the women sewing skills so they can generate some income to provide for their families.
We found that everywhere we travelled there were many Christians and many churches. This area truly is a ripe harvest field. Many of the believers are people of prayer and looking to God for change in the nation. Prayer is needed for the government, where corruption is a major problem. You may have seen recently reported on the T.V. news that investigations have been made into the police force which has been acting “as a law unto itself” – people have been unlawfully killed.
Kenya needs our prayers and support. We believe Bishop Lucas and his wife are faithful, godly people and they are so grateful for your prayers.
